Filmmaker Sharon Hyman seeks adulthood. Finds it on CBC. Maybe

MONTREAL - When are you a grown-up? When you marry? Create kids? Receive the first bill with your name on it?

Had you grown up with or around Sharon Hyman, you would have been asked on camera in Neverbloomers: The Search for Grownuphood, the Montreal filmmaker's exploration of the unfinished self.

Hyman insists her film, screening Monday on the CBC Documentary channel, "isn't about 'failure to launch' or Peter Pan syndrome - it is the opposite." Because this is not about the wilful dodgers, clueless flops or escapees from adulthood. "This concerns people who wanted to be grown-up." And awoke from the afternoon nap of their lives to wonder: What happened? Am I still a child?

Hyman traces the film's genesis back a decade, when, herself on the cusp of 40, she "fixed up" friend and author Joel Yanofsky with the woman he would marry. He moved out of his childhood home - at 43. "Nobody prepares you how to be a grown-up," Yanofsky said at the time. (You can hear the plangency.) Hey, that might make a good movie ...

Hyman had been making short autobiographical films with friend Naomi Levine since childhood, so why not? And the more she posed the question, the more friends and family recognized themselves in the Neverbloomer premise. Hyman wondered: "Is it because I don't have all the external trappings?" She has lived for 30 years on the same N.D.G. street, is unmarried, childless, un-9-to-5'ed, does not host shmancy cocktail parties for the boss or use a cigarette holder. She doesn't have a driver's licence.

And as Hyman explored Neverbloomerdom, she found herself embodying it, spending a decade completing her film. She enlisted family members from multiple generations, mom (dad wouldn't be filmed - brave dad), grandparents, a nurse, a doctor, a rabbi, lifelong and long-lost friends, associates, a filmmaking "mentor" (to be explained), Aunt Rhoda ...

Neverbloomers is informal, disarmingly personal and playful in style and tone. Gazette colleague John Griffin once called Hyman ?funny and scarily real,? and you can see his point. She is comfortable with self-doubt and neurosis, and thereby frees her subjects to lower whatever defences there might be and muse away. Editing down 50 to 60 hours of footage into an hour, she found revealing moments with people of a previous generation ? people one might have assumed were adamantine in their self-assurance, who wonder themselves about the difference, in personal terms, between 77 and 7.

?These are people that I have relationships with, and it?s intimate, and that?s why it works," Hyman says. "Most of all, the people are amazing in it. You don?t see this on TV, people talking about how they really feel inside.?

There are gems like: "So now I feel bad that I'm making you feel bad that I'm insecure," and "It's like one endless high school experience." What is? Everything is.

But this level of querulous openness leaves one ... well, open to challenge, criticism, tweaks, barbs. As Hyman observes: "A lot of the people in the film are really mean to me."

Well, one thing the film is not is a documentary. The instructively withering voice of Peter Wintonick, the acclaimed director behind Manufacturing Consent and a 2006 Governor General's Award winner, rings throughout as an almost goading spirit. This is the guy who supposedly provides guidance to Hyman in her film career, throwing out the word "neurotic" and challenging the very premise beneath Hyman's investigation: Why would you even want to "wither into adulthood? Do you know any adults who play?" And hearing mother Guita say "you're still struggling as a filmmaker" will make every daughter of a mom wince.

Hyman observes that "we're always comparing our insides to everybody else's outsides," which, yes, guarantees self-doubt. Credit also the whimsical art direction and Randy Bishop's '70s song Don't You Worry, which loops through the film with blithe irony.

"I remember growing up and my parents had cocktail parties, and my father was a Mason, and my mother looked like an Avon ad," Hyman says, but she clearly states this is not some paean to residual nostalgia. "You know, I don't idealize the '50s or the past at all. You just have to think about what it was like to be a visible minority or gay."

When do you become a grown-up? And when do you know it? How about when you watch the CBC broadcast of your documentary on Monday night surrounded by family who have yet to see it and live-blog the experience? Surely withstanding that level of discomfort would prove Hyman has undercut or outlived Neverbloomerdom. Or that she's still a kid on the couch with the folks, waiting for confirmation of the uncomfirmable: that you've arrived. You're a big girl now.

Neverbloomers: The Search for Grownuphood airs Monday, Feb. 27, at 8 p.m. on the CBC Documentary channel.

Why Cats Make These types of Fantastic Pets | angelcare.org

Cats are quite good pets as they never require as substantially notice as other alternatives these types of like a this site puppy. You don?t should walk the cat so you never have to offer with it barking at everything that happens to walk by the house. Younger cats are incredibly playful and you will interact with them whenever you choose to. Nevertheless, most cats are material to engage in with toys or to generally be independent.

TeacHer Finance: Get AP Credit, Avoid Student Loan Debt

I don't talk very much about it here, but I teach two A.P. classes. As in, two different A.P. subjects. If you're unfamiliar with the College Board's Advanced Placement program, it basically allows high school students to take advanced classes (to simulate a college experience) and gives them an opportunity to earn college credit in those subjects if they score well on an end-of-course exam. So essentially, I'm charged with teaching my students college-level material and grading them as if they were university freshmen.

As you can imagine, this is a ton of work. Unlike a college professor, I don't have a T.A. to help me grade essays and homework assignments or put together lectures. It's all me. Plus, even though it's supposed to be a college experience, high school issues often get in the way of really making it a college experience. For example, when a pep rally or two-hour delay disrupts the schedule, that's simply time lost, time that I'll never get back to help my kids get ready for the exam. So the workload is huge and the pressure can feel immense.

Despite these inconveniences, I'm a huge believer in the A.P. program. First, a lot of my students don't have any family members who are college graduates; they have no idea what to expect from a college class and AP gives them an opportunity to get prepared - for free. I have no firm data to back this up, but I strongly suspect that experiencing the challenge of AP courses before actually getting to college has saved countless kids from flunking out. They know what to expect and aren't overwhelmed by the workload.

Second, A.P. has the potential to save students serious money if they study hard and do well on the end-of-course exams. For example, I entered college with 23 credits from A.P., almost an entire year's worth of courses. According to my alma mater's website, that would save a currently matriculating student (in-state, which I was) almost $14,000 for the 2011-2012 school year. That's real money, and performing well on the A.P. tests is so much more controllable than trying to get scholarships. If you study hard enough, the credit is yours - you're not competing against a zillion other people or depending on finicky foundations or individuals for money. In other words, earning college credit through A.P. is a sure-fire way to reduce your college tuition burden.

So if you have kids or just know a teenager that is thinking about how to pay for college, encourage them to consider taking A.P. classes - and encourage them to study hard. The end-of course exams are tough but fair, and committing to keeping on top of the A.P. coursework all year really does pay off. Taking A.P. classes and doing well on the A.P. tests is a little-discussed method for seriously reducing the cost of attending college - think about it!

Did you take A.P. classes? Do you know a teenager who is? How did you pay for college?

HBT: No, Braun didn't get off on technicality

In almost all cases, the people who say that someone ?got off on a technicality? or took advantage of a ?loophole? really mean ?I think the SOB was guilty and because of that I don?t care if the proper safeguards and protocols were followed!? ?It?s a ridiculous stance.

Ridiculous because procedures such as chain of custody and the proper handling of samples ? which were not followed in Braun?s case ? exist for a reason. That reason is not, contrary to popular grunting, to make it harder for decent prosecutors or authorities to do their jobs. It?s to ensure the integrity of the system. And, in this case, the integrity of the sample. Every detail that is not adhered to presents another opportunity for a sample to be tainted, lost or otherwise compromised. When that happens the test itself is, by definition, unreliable and any reference to what it may or may not have shown is utterly beside the point.

And while that, in this case, may work to Braun?s benefit, in the long run adherence to those procedures is critical to the integrity and efficacy of the drug testing process. And that?s far more important than whatever this means for one man?s drug test.

The response I expect to that is ?well, just because procedures weren?t followed doesn?t mean that Braun didn?t take something!? ?My response: you?re right. ?We don?t know that. And we can?t know that, because the testing program is not nor can it reasonably be expected to be one that decides absolute guilt or absolute innocence. ?In this it?s just like the criminal justice system which never determines actual innocence. It determines the lack of guilt. It does this because the burden is on the?accuser?and not the accused, same as with the drug testing procedure.

Except in the drug testing world the burden is way, way lower than ?beyond a reasonable doubt.? ?All MLB has to do is take a sample and test it properly, while adhering to a relatively simple set of procedures. ?If MLB, in this case, could not be bothered to do even that, then neither it nor anyone else has cause to label Ryan Braun a drug user.

Ryan Braun got off on a technicality? ?Bull. ?Major League Baseball half-assed it and failed to adhere to the standards it set up for itself. ?In that case I have no problem considering Braun to be the less culpable party. ?Anyone who says otherwise is more interested in assumptions and the casting of aspersions than they are in a rigorous and legitimate drug testing regime.

BLACK EMERGENCY MANAGERS ASSOCIATION: Physical Fitness ...

Fit for Duty? The Need for Physical Fitness Programs for Law Enforcement Officers

By Sergeant Adrienne Quigley, Arlington County, Virginia, Police Department; and IACP Fellow

It should not be surprising that physical fitness and exercise improve long-term health. Studies have shown that sedentary people have twice the risk of coronary artery disease than active people as well as a higher risk of stroke, colon cancer, and back injuries. Only 22 percent of U.S. adults get at least 30 minutes of light to moderate exercise five or more times a week, and less than 10 percent exercise vigorously at least three times a week.1 More than 50 percent of deaths in the United States are attributable to these and other lifestyle choices.2

Courteney Cox drinks bowl of ranch dressing

Courteney Cox drinks ranch dressing on "Anderson."

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

The Hidden Valley Ranch dressing folks have got to be speed-dialing Courteney Cox's phone right about now.

The "Cougar Town" star appears on Anderson Cooper's syndicated talk show "Anderson" Tuesday to discuss her series and her relationship with husband David Arquette, but she also powered down part of a bowl of her favorite salad topper.

Turns out Cox loves Hidden Valley Ranch dressing so much that just using it on salads or as a dip for veggies isn't enough. When host Anderson Cooper provided her with a giant bowl of the stuff, she couldn't resist drinking some of it straight.

And restaurants, don't brag up your chef-crafted, all-organic versions of the stuff to?Cox.?She told the host that when restaurants tell her their ranch dressing is homemade, that's not what she wants to hear. "I'm like, 'Wrong answer,'" she said. "I want Hidden Valley."

Cox also told the host that she and husband Arquette, from whom she is separated, still have a good relationship,?but that daughter Coco, 7, is concerned about mom's feelings as Arquette moves on with other women.

"She says things like, 'Mom, I don't want you to get hurt, but daddy has a girlfriend," Cox told Cooper. "Obviously she'd like to see us back together because all kids do, but she understands that we're OK, that we love each other and we will always be a family."

Cox's interview with Cooper airs on "Anderson" Feb. 21. Check listings for local stations and air times.

For defeating all the monsters in an area a player who does this will gain one thousand experience points. If the kills in an area are split between a number of people then however many monsters they have defeated in one area gets multiplied by two and added to their experience points. So if you defeated 20 goblins in an area and they are worth fifty experience points then you get:

50 x 20 x 2= 2000 Experience Points

If you only defeat five though then when an area is cleared by someone you get:

50 x 5 x 2= 500 Experience Points
