Consider The Ice With Fantasy Hockey | Electronic Document ...

Hockey is a rapid-paced, action-packed, and quite often brutal sport so rife with passion that it can have the result of equally boiling and freezing its audience?s blood above the training course of regulation play ? and let us not even get into the relentless pleasure of overtime and the playoffs. Phrases can?t seriously do the accompanying sense of exhilaration justice. Fantasy sports, however, can add an more layer of anticipation to just about every recreation played by every last crew, reworking a fandom into a pastime that is when remarkable and complicated, and that facilitates the truest hockey fans to put their know-how of the activity to the best test.

Fantasy hockey is played concurrently with the present time of year and tends to operate in a single of two varieties: limited and unlimited groups. When enjoying with confined groups, athletes are chosen dependent on a draft or auction process to advertise fairness. Each and every athlete can only be recruited by a particular player on an initial arrive, primary serve foundation. Considering that this restrictions the pool for players, teams are held number of ? often relating to eight and twelve for each league ? so that expertise levels can continue to be great. There are, having said that, some fantasy hockey leagues that embrace the dilution of the talent considering they think that it doesn?t boring perform but may make it additional interesting and unpredictable.

Collaborating in limitless workforce fantasy hockey opens elements up for gamers. In this model of perform, any participant can draft any athlete regardless of even if an alternate player has drafted him or not. This allows customers to draft the very best groups according to their possess specifications and predictions, and usually has the effect of holding scoring high. The sport nonetheless remains hard, though the problem just shifts to the identification and range of the accurate unsung hockey heroes to complement the powerhouses.

Irregardless of the type of the fantasy hockey recreation, thorough thought has to be set into finding a staff of athletes. Individuals who target on the classic higher-scorers will track down their selves at a disadvantage versus gamers who select to draft more perfectly-rounded athletes. This is merely because position techniques can take every thing into account from ambitions and helps, to penalty minutes and energy enjoy factors, to shutouts and hat tips, so players who are stars on the ice may very well verify disappointing in the fantasy hockey rink.

Both equally designs can be overwhelming at very first, but fantasy hockey methods abound both on the net and in actual living, and there are plenty of communities that foster newcomers and make getting into the sport an effortless endeavor. Perfecting fantasy hockey can require additional time, but it is one of those going through-boosting important things that make people ponder how they really enjoyed, or even contemplated themselves a supporter of the activity before they started out having fun with. Those people who bleed ice could want to give it a go their selves one day.

JetBlue pilot's bizarre behavior began at takeoff

A federal criminal complaint alleges that JetBlue captain Clayton Osbon told his first officer, "we need to take a leap of faith." NBC's Tom Costello reports.

By NBC News services

A federal criminal complaint against Clayton Osbon, the 49-year-old JetBlue captain who had a mid-air meltdown on Tuesday, suggests he was acting strangely as Flight 191 was taking off from New York for Las Vegas.

The complaint, NBC News has learned, states Osbon arrived late to JFK and missed the crew briefing. As the flight took off, Osbon mentioned ?being evaluated by someone? to the first officer, spoke of church and needing to ?focus.? He asked the first officer to take the controls as he made incoherent comments about religion and then said, ?things just don?t matter.?

Over the radio, Osbon yelled at air traffic controllers to be quiet and admonished the first officer for talking on the radio and then said, ?we need to take a leap of faith.? He spoke of sins in Las Vegas and said, ?we?re not going to Vegas,? according to the complaint.

Osbon then abruptly left the cockpit, banged on the door of an occupied lavatory and later became irate when he learned he was locked out of the cockpit.

Osbon is charged with interfering with a flight crew and, if convicted, could face 20 years in prison.

One aviation expert said he couldn't remember a pilot being prosecuted on the charge, which reads as though it was written with passengers in mind.

"I've been doing this for more than 50 years, and I can't recall anything like this," said Denny Kelly, a private investigator in Dallas and former Braniff Airlines pilot.

JetBlue spokeswoman Allison Steinberg said Osbon had been suspended pending a review of the flight.

JetBlue CEO Dave Barger told TODAY?s Matt Lauer that Osbon was a ?consummate professional.?

Clayton Osbon, who had been flying for nearly 25 years, allegedly began yelling at air traffic controllers and later ran toward the cockpit door after getting locked out.

Osbon?s troubling behaviors have shed light on how the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) monitors pilots? health, both physical and mental.

The FAA requires that airline pilots have a medical certificate, which must be renewed annually if the pilot is under 40 and every six months if the pilot is older than 40. To receive the certificate, pilots undergo a physical examination by an FAA-designated physician.

Osbon?s last exam was in December, and he passed, FAA said.

Related: Mental health of airline crews in the spotlight

Pilots will normally be grounded from duty if they suffer from bipolar or personality disorders, certain anxieties and psychosis. FAA does allow pilots to fly while taking some anti-depressant drugs.

?These are very serious conditions and as a result they will impair a pilot?s judgement,? said Dr. Anthony Bilotta, an aviation medical examiner. ?They would impair anyone?s judgement for that matter.?

John Cox, a former captain for US Airways, said: ?A captain on an airline is one of many jobs that you do not want to have somebody incapacitated.?

Osbon?s bizarre behaviors have perplexed many people who know him.

The pilot lives in Georgia, but also has a ?crash pad??a part-time residence to stay before or in between trips ? in New York. His land lady, Wanda Serra, was stunned by Osbon?s behavior, saying, ?what could have happened? I don?t know ? I don?t know.?

"I can't say whether it's shock or disbelief," said Justin Ates, a corporate jet pilot and friend who lives in Richmond Hill, Ga. "It's hard to describe what you feel when you see something that's completely 100 percent out of character."

"He wouldn't intentionally hurt anyone," said Bud Lawyer, a friend and neighbor. "He's a kind-hearted, generous, loving teddy bear. It's totally out of character for this to happen to him."

Osbon went to church but seldom talked about it and never seemed overly zealous, Lawyer said. And while the friends would occasionally chat about events in the Middle East, their talk never went beyond casual conversation about the events in the news, he said.

Osbon was also a direct marketer for health shakes sold by Visalus Sciences, a marketing company based in Troy, Mich. Ashley Guerra, a fellow Visalus marketer in Georgia, said she saw Osbon just last weekend and that he appeared friendly and helpful as usual.

In an interview last year with the local magazine Richmond Hill Reflections, Osbon said he first got in the cockpit when he was 6 or 7 and had ambitions of becoming a motivational speaker. His father and another man died after the engines in their plane failed over Daytona Beach while en route to look for treasure in Fort Lauderdale, according to 1995 story in the Washington Island Observer, a newspaper in the small Wisconsin community where Osbon's parents had a home.?

In a statement issued to NBC News, Osbon's mother, Judy Osbon, said her son "loved to fly."

"He also took his piloting very seriously and was very good at it. ?I've only known Clayton to be a cheerful, conscientious and caring person."?

Osbon's LinkedIn profile states that he received a degree from aeronautical physics from Hawthorne College and a physics degree from Carnegie Mellon University. However, Carnegie Mellon spokeswoman Teresa Thomas said Osbon attended the school for three years but never obtained his degree.

"On a Sunday morning he'd call me up and say, 'Let's go for a flight,'" neighbor Erich Thorp said. "Even with that little Piper Cub, before he would take it off the ground he would spend 15 minutes checking everything out. He had a whole list he would check. He was as careful a pilot as you could imagine."

NBC News' Tom Costello, msnbc.com's Rebecca Ruiz and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Using Online Curriculum - IPP Photography Reference and ...

March 29th, 2012

We?ve home schooled for quite a few years. We?ve always used conventional books to cover the subjects and it?s worked very well. My middle children right now are close to starting junior high school grades and want to try on online curriculum for their studies. I spoke to a few other home school families that are doing their schooling online and they?ve all had very positive things to say about it. We?re going to give it a try for the boys, since they?re so interested in it.

Doomsday drivel: promoting nuclear paranoia

Fred Pearce, consultant

doomsday.jpgThe Doomsday Machine, a sometimes mendacious and frequently anti-scientific book, has one claim to novelty. It combines hysterical opposition to all things nuclear with an equally deranged climate-change denialism. One wonders both why the publishers published, and who they imagine will enjoy it.

The authors argue that concern about climate change is largely a public relations exercise by nuclear power lobbyists to revive their fortunes. And that it is sustained by corrupted scientists at the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in league with ?new nuclear romantics? and ?environmentalists [who believe] humanity deserves to be punished for its poor stewardship of the Earth.?

From this original vantage point, they apparently see no need to challenge the argument that low-carbon nuclear energy can help combat climate change. So instead, a chapter purporting to slay ?the myth that nuclear power is green? spends its time rehearsing ludicrous attacks on named environmentalists and climate scientists, such as Gaia inventor James Lovelock, for having the temerity to support nuclear power.

Other sections attack such straw men as the notions that nuclear energy is ?too cheap to meter?, and that ?nuclear radiation is harmless?. Since nobody has said such things for half a century, to attack them is puerile.

Of course, there are some serious drawbacks to nuclear power that warrant proper attention - as there are drawbacks to all sources of energy. In the real world, we have to make choices about how we power our world. But the authors fail to make any meaningful comparisons between nuclear and its rivals. Do they know, for instance, that burning coal is a bigger day-to-day radiation hazard than nuclear energy?

Martin Cohen is a philosopher, who characterises himself as standing beside Karl Popper against Al Gore. Andrew McKillop is an energy economist and past proponent of the idea of ?peak oil?, though here he appears to deny the proposition. I fear their starting premise that nuclear energy is a ?doomsday machine? rather unhinged their thinking.

China's Not-So-Super Computer Program

SHENZHEN, China? The supercomputer in this southern boomtown is named Nebulae for the interstellar clouds of gas that give birth to stars. The machine symbolizes China's soaring ambition to challenge the U.S. and other developed nations in technology, but also underscores the limitations of what China can achieve.

China's unexpected progress in developing supercomputers, the brains of modern science and an engine of economic development, has caused an outbreak of anxiety over the past two years in the U.S., which has long been the field's undisputed leader. China's advances in computing have been critical to its ability to build spacecraft and advanced warplanes and to its growing prowess in genetics. China overtook Japan in 2010 as the number two investor in research and development, according to Battelle Memorial Institute, a Columbus, Ohio, research outfit. Though China remains well behind the U.S. in R&D spending, it is gaining ground.

But a closer look at China's supercomputers reveals a program that is far less of a threat to U.S. technological dominance than commonly believed. Chinese researchers say decisions about how supercomputers are used are often made by local politicians more interested in local development projects than breakthrough technology.

Associated Press

The Tianhe-1A supercomputer at the National Center for Supercomputing in Tianjin, China.

China's bureaucrats meanwhile haven't figured out how to mount software development projects that come close to U.S. or European standards. Chinese scientists also lack the funding, and freedom, to explore technologies that haven't already been endorsed by the government, which can keep them well behind the cutting edge.

The result is that China's supercomputing projects aren't producing the kinds of breakthroughs that can create new industries. It is instead being deployed to help the country simply catch up with the U.S. and Europe, in areas ranging from health care to automotive design to aviation. That is important economically, but it is also a reminder that China remains a developing country whose main goal is to close the economic and technology gaps with richer nations.

"The strategy has been never to lead, but to follow" technologically, said Qian Depei, a Beihang University researcher, who has worked for decades on China's advanced computing programs. "That was the most economically efficient way to develop."

Richard Suttmeier,a University of Oregon expert on Chinese science policy, said China hasn't figured out "the right formula" to pioneer new technologies in part because researchers are rewarded according to the number of academic papers they publish rather than the quality and novelty of their work.

Supercomputers are largely seen in China as local economic-development tools. City governments play a much larger role in setting China's supercomputer research agenda than they do in the U.S. because Chinese cities finance a larger share of the projects.

Shenzhen, which paid three-quarters of the $1.3 billion cost of the Shenzhen supercomputer center, "doesn't care about climate change and astrophysics"?traditional supercomputer research projects?said Feng Shengzhong, deputy director of a Shenzhen research institute that develops applications for the Nebulae. "They care about local problems."

He is working on a plan to use the Nebulae to improve health care services in South China?a socially important goal but not one that makes use of the power of what is ranked as the world's fourth-fastest supercomputer.

China is now home to 74 of the world's 500 fastest supercomputers?which can make trillions of calculations every second?up from just 10 in 2007. Changes in the way the machines are designed have helped the country.

In the 1980s, when Cray Research in Minneapolis was the world's supercomputer technology leader, the machines were powered by a few enormously powerful processors, whose design was difficult to match. Exports were tightly controlled. Starting in the 1990s, supercomputer researchers began to lash together tens of thousands of off-the-shelf microprocessors to work on a single job. China could buy those computer chips from Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and other firms and make its own machines.

Analysts say that Chinese scientists have benefited from training at top computer centers in the U.S. and Europe and the availability of computer chips and other parts from abroad, as well as consistent Chinese government funding and support. The supercomputer effort isn't dogged by charges that the Chinese have ripped off foreign technology. Rather, Chinese scientists say U.S. restrictions on some high-technology exports have required them to redouble their domestic efforts.

Still, China remains largely dependent on U.S. made microprocessors?the brains of the computer?which puts it behind the leading edge. Beijing has developed one computer that uses locally designed microprocessors, but doesn't run commercially available software. Another microprocessor in development, the Loongson, would use existing software and could eventually become a competitor to Intel and others.

Some of China's supercomputers have been used to design wings for China's stealth fighter, now in test phase, and to design parts for China's first commercial jet. Beijing lags well behind the U.S. in both efforts.

In Shenzhen, the Nebulae, which is still being tested, is expected to improve storm warning systems and help genetics companies search for the causes of disease. But it is also scheduled to be used for far less demanding tasks, such as processing video animation.

In the U.S., said Steve Conway, a supercomputer analyst at market researcher IDC, in Framingham, Mass., cities and states chip in money for local supercomputer centers, but they generally have little say in setting the priorities for the machines. U.S. supercomputer centers nearly always focus on advanced scientific research, such as designing drugs tailored to individuals.

Research at the edge of technology is risky, but can have big payoffs and leave competitors like China well behind. "American alarmism isn't always well-founded," said Mr. Suttmeier, of the University of Oregon. "The critical point is keep devising strategies in the U.S. to stay way ahead of the game."

One of China's greatest weaknesses is in software development, a potentially crippling problem because the usefulness of the machines depends on the quality of the software applications. Less than 10% of supercomputing funding goes to developing such applications, said Chinese researchers who complain that political leaders press them to build headline-grabbing new machines rather than focus on whether they are used to their full capabilities.

In the U.S., which spends about six times as much on supercomputers as China, the software budget equals about 30% of hardware spending, and computer specialists say even that level isn't sufficient.

The battle for software dollars is so intense in China that researchers rarely work as a team on long-term software projects, Chinese scientists say.

To illustrate the uneven perception of China's supercomputer efforts, Mr. Qian, the veteran supercomputer researcher, holds his palms at hip level. "Generally, we're here," he said, "but everyone thinks we're higher," as he raises his palms to shoulder height.

CT GOP scuttles new disclosure rules for delegates

A rules change that would have forced state GOP convention delegates to disclose any pecuniary relationships they have with the candidates seeking their party's endorsement is dead on arrival. The decision gives new ammunition to a number of prominent Republicans who claim that votes will once again go to the highest bidder at the upcoming conclave.

The Republican State Central Committee effectively mothballed a proposal last week that would have required each campaign to submit a list of all paid staffers and subcontractors serving in a dual capacity as delegates to the state party before the May convention.

While not applying to vendors hired by the candidates, the proposal called for delegates who figuratively wear two hats to don badges on the floor of the convention in Hartford disclosing their allegiances.

By a vote of 42-10 at its March 13 meeting, the governing body of the state party declined to forward the recommendations to rules committee of the convention, renewing allegations that the GOP is in the tank for deep-pocketed candidates.

Former Congressman Christopher Shays is pledging to abide by the spirit of the proposal going into his convention bout with GOP Senate rival Linda McMahon, who captured the Republican endorsement two years ago when she ran for the same office and lost the general election to Democrat Richard Blumenthal.

"McMahon is trying to buy votes and she's one of the reasons I got into this race," Shays said. "Last election, I thought, what is my party thinking? She literally bought the convention. And she lost miserably in the general election and brought all the statewide candidates down with her, and she's back at it."

McMahon's spokeswoman Erin Isaac plugged an economic rival plan recently rolled out by the campaign and called on Shays to focus his efforts on how to help people who are hurting financially and put them back to work.

"I'm not sure if it's Linda's plan to cut middle class taxes or the mounting list of 120 Republican Town Committee chairs and vice chairs that has the congressman resorting to negative campaign tactics this week, but either way, I encourage him to check out www.lindasplan.com," Isaac said in a statement to Greenwich Time.

In addition to a list of paid staffers and subcontractors, Shays said he will submit the names of vendors used by his campaign who are also delegates to the party.

"No one will wonder," Shays said. "I'm not going to be silent about this stuff. The Republican Party I know and have always believed in cares about morals and ethics.

"I want the party that cares about morals and ethics."

Connecticut GOP Chairman Jerry Labriola Jr. defended the party's handling of the issue, saying that he delegated the task of crafting recommendations to several State Central Committee members.

"I allowed the matter to be fully considered and debated," Labriola said. "Nothing was swept under the rug. The members have spoken and we will now turn to the important matters at hand, like raising money and recruiting great candidates."

Labriola did not take a position on the proposed rules changes.

"The delegates to our conventions must now put aside distractions and use their best judgment to nominate Republicans with the greatest chance of electability this fall," Labriola said.

Joseph Visconti, a West Hartford Republican and former town council member who twice ran for Congress unsuccessfully, slammed the GOP's reluctance to even allow the proposal to go forward to the rules committee.

"We had an opportunity to impose those laws on ourselves and we failed as a party," Visconti said. "Integrity was sent to the gallows."

Characterizing himself as a Shays supporter who backed McMahon in 2010, Visconti said he was struck by the number of delegates hired by McMahon to make to T-shirts or signs during the last convention.

"She's a major a driver," Visconti said. "I just think it's unhealthy. We may lose a candidate that feels cheated because the process wasn't really open and fair."

A person close to the McMahon campaign claimed that some of the very Republicans who stand to be delegates at the upcoming convention and approached McMahon for work opportunities are now on the payroll of Shays.

Among the State Central Committee members who voted against sending the proposal to the rules committee was Edward Dadakis of Greenwich, who characterized the requirements as unwieldy and difficult to enforce.

"I think for those town committees who are concerned about having delegates who work for a candidate, they need to handle their delegate-nominating process accordingly and not elect delegates who work for candidates," said Dadakis, who also represents parts of Stamford and New Canaan on the State Central Committee.

Dadakis' recollection of the 2010 convention, where McMahon edged former Congressman Rob Simmons and financial talking head Peter Schiff after a number of delegates flipped, contrasted with that of Shays.

"I saw a convention two years ago that was well run," Dadakis said. "There's wheeling and dealing at every convention. Whether you're being paid or not, the room is filled with a thousand politicians. Politicians wheel and deal."

Critics of the disclosure requirements pointed out that the vast majority of the people in the convention hall commonly wear T-shirts, stickers and baseball caps with the candidates' names on them in the first place.

"What the suggestion was, you basically wear a scarlet letter that you're employed by a candidate," Dadakis said. "If the person refuses to wear it, what would you do?"

Michael Vitali, the Wallingford Republican in charge of the special panel that crafted the proposal, said the purpose of the requirements was to address a "perceived problem."

Party rules already require campaign staff to wear credentials on the convention floor, but there is a loophole, according Vitali.

"If you're actually a delegate and you are a staffer from a campaign, you are exempted from that rule because you are a duly credentialed delegate," Vitali said.

Vitali does not regard the panel's work as being in vain.

"I think it represents an excellent triumph of transparent decision making by the Republican Party of Connecticut," Vitali said.

Brian K. Hill, who is also running for Senate on the GOP side, characterized the outcome of the vote as a disservice to the party.

"This is a no-brainer," Hill said. "If you don't have anything to hide, there's nothing wrong with transparency."

Justin Bernier, making his second bid for Congress in the 5th District as a Republican, echoed Hill's comments in a statement to Greenwich Time.

"Mark Twain said that it's impossible to convince a man of something if his paycheck depends on him believing the opposite," Bernier said. "Every Republican in Connecticut has a right to know which convention delegates are getting paychecks from which candidates. We need to be the party of truth and transparency -- not the party of payoffs."

Sean Murphy, a Woodbury Republican and former State Central Committee member, slammed the convention process.

"I think the whole convention system should be thrown out to begin with it because too many people are making money on it," Murphy said. "I just comes down to I want an honest process. That's selling our democracy, and I don't find that OK."

Murphy said he confronted former state Sen. Louis DeLuca at a recent Republican Town Committee meeting in Woodbury about DeLuca's fitness to be a delegate to this year's convention.

Murphy said that DeLuca's T-shirt company earned $140,000 from McMahon's campaign in 2010, prompting a question about whether the former lawmaker is reprising his role as a vendor.

"He told me it was none of my business," Murphy said. "I personally don't think you should be a delegate if you've received any financial compensation from a candidate for that convention."

DeLuca bristled at Murphy's criticism in an interview with Greenwich Time, saying that his support for McMahon predated her using his T-shirt company as a vendor. He acknowledged that the company is making some T-shirts for McMahon in the current campaign, but said it is not to the same extent as the last time.

"I am insulted from somebody like Sean Murphy implying that I can be bought," DeLuca said. "It's been my experience in life that people who've accused people of doing things have probably done it themselves. I've sold a number of things to Democrats, too. Does that mean they've bought me, too?"

Herve Leger Spiritually Seeking A Death Both Beaut

Just before New Years, I found myself helping a family whose loved one was dying. As a chaplain in a hospital, I never know whether a family will ?allow? me (or any other chaplain) ?in? at the time that is most painful for them. Amazingly, most families welcome a professional chaplain into the ?holy ground? of those who are dying. I think that they somehow know that we are there not to convert or judge Herve Leger, but to help them with the dying process.

To sit with them, for however long is necessary, so that they can be supported as their loved one is dying. As a society, we are not taught this in school, nor does it come easily. We don?t know how to act or what to do or how to be with someone who is dying (especially once death moved out of our homes and into hospitals). As a professional chaplain, I can help them and be a reminding ?presence? that they and their loved one are not alone. God is also present.

Decisions that are made when someone is nearing the end of their life are often fraught with second-guessing: Did we make the right decision? Will it make a difference? Will it give our loved one more time? Will it ease any physical pain the patient might be experiencing? And what about the pain? If we ask for more morphine, will we be hastening his death?

Second-guessing decisions that are made with the knowledge one has at the time the decision is made can be fraught with what ifs. Looking back with knowledge gained after a decision has been made can only cause pain and more what ifs. We make decisions with the knowledge that we have at the time we make that decision and somehow, we have to accept those decisions that are made and not regret them ? because we made them based on what we knew at the time ? not 24 or 48 hours or days or weeks later.

Jesse was a lucky man in so many ways. But in no way greater than as he lay dying. His wife, Anna, and his daughter Terry and son David (not their real names) did not leave his side. They created a holy space for him in his dying. They sang to him, talked to him, held him, cried over him, caressed him and loved him in a way that can only be described as God?s Holy Ground.

They also gave him the greatest gift they could have given him at that time ? the gift of letting him go. While it was so hard for each of them, they let Jesse know that they were going to be OK. And, that while they would miss him and it would be a very difficult time for them, they wanted him to go in peace, knowing that those he loved most dearly were going to be OK. They also gave him another gift ? Jesse didn?t want to give up hope and so his family kept that hope alive with him.

Watching this selfless act of loving on their part gave me a keen insight into who Jesse was and his life with Anna and their kids. The love that Jesse and Anna shared was passed on to their children, who I believe are now passing that kind of love onto their children ? so the impact that Jesse had on this world will go on for generations.

My prayer for this family was that, as they looked back on the last weeks of Jesse?s life, they would find, along with the pain of him not being here, the wonderful memories of their last Thanksgiving and Christmas together as a family, as spouses and grandchildren joined in filling Jesse?s and Anna?s home with love. I also prayed that they would also be able to recognize the risen Lord who traveled with them on this journey and has now said to Jesse, ?Well done, good and faithful servant.?

Would that we could all experience such a peace-filled death. As his daughter commented to me in a recent email exchange, ?The moment of his death was as beautiful as it was painful.? So, while the pain of his death was and is still present, the cut is ?clean,? as the late, Rev. Dr. William Sloane Coffin said from the pulpit of The Riverside Church in his first sermon following the unexpected death of his 24-year-old son, Alex. Dr. Coffin said, ?Because there are no rankling unanswered questions, and because Alex and I simply adored each other, the wound for me is deep, but clean.?

Would that we could all make that claim. Would that we could live our lives in such a way as to ensure that all of our relationships are ?clean,? because death can arrive at any time. Are you ready for that time?

People Are Having Trouble Charging Their New iPads [Ipad]

Folks around the internet are reporting that the new iPad's battery isn't charging when it's pushed to its hardware limit. The culprit? Could be the giant freaking battery Apple shoved down the iPad's pants. More »

5 Ways Apple Could Stumble

How high will it go?

Answering that question about Apple has become a kin to a parlor game for stock analysts. The company merely can't seem to make a bad business decision.. Apple's stock, now in the rarified air above $600 per share, is up 48 percent this year alone. Over the last five years, the stock has soared 571 percent, while the broader market has basically been flat.

[New iPad Brings Out Enthusiasts]

The company recently said it would use part of its bulging, $97 billion cash stockpile to institute a dividend and buy back some of its shares, with room to do more of that in the future. Investing firm Zacks has an Apple price target of $654 over the next six months. There's chatter among investors of Apple shares some day cresting the $1,000 mark.

Apple's formula for success is no secret. Under late CEO Steve Jobs, Apple developed innovative and intuitive products like the iPod, iPhone and iPad, transforming old industries such as music and publishing while creating new ones such as app development. In the process, Apple built a fanatically loyal customer base. More than that, Apple has developed a whole content and technology universe, which means that even when hot gizmos start to cool, millions of customers will still rely on Apple for information and entertainment.

But no company is invulnerable, and former high-flyers such as Eastman Kodak, General Motors, AOL and Sun Microsystems have proven that the mightiest firms can succumb to hubris and misdirection. Even IBM endured a near-death experience in the 1990s, requiring the corporate equivalent of emergency intervention. Apple could probably ride its current wave of success for years. Yet the seeds of decline are often planted when big companies attain unmatched market power, as Apple has done. Here's how Apple could lose its edge:

The magic could wear off. Apple has millions of happy customers because its products delight and surprise them. To keep it up, Apple can't just crank out incrementally better gizmos. It needs to keep producing game-changers that leap ahead of the competition. The big question is whether the loss of Steve Jobs will blur Apple's vision or stall innovation.. "The untimely death of Steve Jobs may hurt Apple in this regard," Zacks says in its latest analyst report on the company. "New management will be watched heavily regarding its vision and stewardship capabilities."

[See where Steve Jobs ranks among the greats.]

Investing firm UBS notes that 62 percent of Apple's revenue comes from two relatively new products: the iPhone and iPad. For a company that's 35 years old, that's a remarkable testament to its ability to innovate. But it also creates high expectations, and if investors ever sense that Apple is losing its magic touch, the recent stock price run-up could turn out to be a temporary bubble.

Apple's competitors could wake up. Apple has a solid marketplace footing in respect to mobile phones and music players, while also jumping out to a huge lead in the tablet business. But in virtually all segments, Apple faces big competitors with deep pockets that are doubling down on new products and honing their sights on Apple. Zacks points out, for instance, that Apple has only a 15 percent market share in the mobile phone business, while Google's Android system, which debuted after the iPhone, has already nabbed 53 percent of the market. And competition will get tougher as Microsoft's Windows phone gains traction.

The market for iPods and competing music players may be close saturated, especially since most phones now play music. Big players such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Samsung, Sony, Amazon and HTC are taking on the iPad with their own tablets. And many analysts expect tablet sales to cut into laptop and desktop computer sales, for Apple as well as other manufacturers. "Increasing competition will hurt [Apple's] top-line going forward," says Zacks.

[See 4 lessons from Kodak's comedown.]

One buffer against competition for Apple has been a market for digital products that is ballooning, which explains why Apple's revenue from smart phones has gone up even as its market share has gone down. Analysts still see a big untapped market for Apple products, such as those in developing countries.. But an unexpected slowdown in way people adopt new technology could make Apple more sensitive to price competition and ultimately cut into profit margins.

Apple could overplay its hand with partners. Apple relies on partnerships with a variety of firms, including music companies, publishers, app developers and wireless providers such as Verizon and AT&T. Ron Adner, a professor at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, who wrote about Apple in a new book called The Wide Lens, says Apple has so far enjoyed "asymmetric power partnerships" in which it's been able to dictate terms and take an oversized cut of any shared profits. The risk is that Apple could exploit its market power to squeeze partners even more, especially if there's increased pressure on Apple to sustain or improve margins. "They need to become more generous with partners, not less generous," says Adner. "The question is whether they can maintain a win-win atmosphere instead of squeezing their partners so much that partners start to look for other deals."

[See what the Facebook IPO reveals about the real economy.]

Apple TV could disappoint. The next big battleground for tech companies is television programming, where Apple is having a harder time developing highly profitable partnerships and gaining the kind of market share it has in other industries. When Apple first got involved in the music industry with the iPod and iTunes, it was static, with relatively little innovation. But TV viewers already have a lot of options, including Netflix, video-on-demand, websites like Hulu and free content apps offered by cable companies. "Apple doesn't have the same minimal viable footprint to jump-start a lead in TVs," says Adner. "It's a very different dynamic than what we saw in music and book publishing." Plus, Apple's ability to dictate terms has made some potential partners wary and more likely to seek alternatives.

Size could become a liability. The pace of innovation almost always slows when companies evolve into a behemoth. Some critics of Google and Microsoft, for instance, argue that these once-groundbreaking companies are now more likely to buy innovative companies than to develop breakthroughs in-house. Market leaders also attract more competition--and patent lawsuits--than niche companies. They have also become big targets for antitrust regulators, as AT&T, IBM, Microsoft and Google have learned.

[See why the economic recovery might be real this time.]

Apple is now the most valuable company in the world by market capitalization. It accounts for 4.1 percent of the value of the S&P 500, according to UBS. Only five companies--AT&T, IBM, Exxon Mobil, Microsoft and General Electric--have ever represented a larger portion of the S&P 500. Apple has defied expectations many times before, so it may turn out to be the rare corporate giant that maintains the hunger and agility of a startup. As the stock keeps rising, that's what investors seem to be betting on.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney wanted to talk about the economy, but Bradley University had other ideas.

The Republican presidential front-runner faced tough questions about his opposition to Planned Parenthood and mandatory birth control coverage as he met with students Monday night.

Romney says people should vote "for the other guy" if they want "free stuff" like female contraception. And he doesn't have an answer for where the millions of women who use Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings and vaccines should go if the women's health provider shuts down.

Romney says the women can go wherever they'd like because it's a free society but that the government shouldn't send tax dollars to Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions.

Illinois holds its Republican presidential primary on Tuesday.

Advantages Of Using Auto Repair Hoffman Estates | Articles For ...

If a poll was to be carried out today, arguably most of the respondents will want to own a European made vehicle. This is especially true when it comes down to buying a used unit from the dealers available. To this end, auto repair Hoffman Estates is highly favored when it comes to maintenance works.

It is quite interesting that vehicles are almost similar to human beings. The same way an individual needs to visit a doctor form time to time, is the same way a car needs to be checked out. There are certain appointments that one keeps with a doctor whether or not they feel unwell.

As a result of this initiative, one does not have to retain the services of another mechanic to check out a vehicle. Anybody can walk into the show room and select a vehicle that appeals to them or best suits their needs. The service technicians will then run a check on it to make sure that it is indeed in a road worthy state before it is dispatched to you.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, there are quite a number of factors that are considered. This ranges from the choice of a service center to the type of work to carry out on the car. At this stage, it is good to mention that there is much more to a simple car tune up than just preventive work.

This is because when all is well, there are benefits that can be traced all the way to the wallet of the motorist. For this reason, having a professional repair shop will go a long way towards ensuring your car runs better. In turn this will translate to better fuel economy and huge cost savings.

To add on to this, the vehicle will tend to experience fewer breakdowns. This in turn serves to improve your efficiency as an individual. A car that is professionally handled will definitely save money that would otherwise have been spent on towing trucks and other related expenses. To this end, using auto repair Hoffman Estates is not only good for the well being your car, but yours as well. auto repair hoffman estates

Social Media Can Help Take Leads Through Your Sales Process ...

People who have never owned a business commonly think that customers simply make a purchase as soon as they come into contact with a business. However, as a business owner with years or even decades of experience under your belt, you know that's quite far from the truth. Although it would be nice if it was that easy to close sales, the reality is it normally takes multiple interactions for a promising lead to become an actual customer.

Although the Internet has not eliminated the standard buying habits that people follow, the good news is it has made it easier to guide them from an interested lead into a customer who actually pays for something. If you are wondering how you can make your sales process more efficient, social media is the answer. By properly utilizing social media, you will be able to guide leads through your sales process and end up with customers who are very happy.

Here are the details of exactly how it works:

Start with Free

Today's consumers have more options than ever. In addition to their increased options, chances are they have been disappointed or completely ripped off by multiple companies. As a result, they are generally hesitant to jump right into making a purchase.

Although that may seem like a major obstacle for your business, there is an easy way to accommodate it. The solution is to begin your sales process with something free. What you give away will depend on your specific business and industry. In addition to being free, the key to getting the most out of this step is to provide something of value. Once you figure out what you should give away, you can use outlets like Twitter to share it with potential customers.

Move Towards Commitment

Some businesses try to skip directly from a free giveaway to paid customers. However, studies have found that adding an intermediary step to your sales process is a more effective option. If you sell a physical product, this will generally be a free sample. And if what you offer falls into a different category, a free trial is usually the best option.

The way that social media can complement this step of your sales process is by allowing warm leads to directly communicate with you. Additionally, when they discuss your free sample or trial through an outlet like Facebook, it creates opportunities for other potential customers to discover your business.

Close the Sale

The last step in a successful sales process is to actually close and gain a new customer. This is arguably the step where social media has the biggest impact. The reason social media can be so beneficial for closing a sale is because people realize they have a public venue for discussing your business. As a result, they understand that you stand behind what you offer. This combination creates a level of trust that would be difficult to achieve without the support of social media.

How big of a role does social media play in your sales process?
