Baby's birth captured in MRI movie for the first time

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

It's unlikely to be a comfortable place to deliver a baby, but now a video documents the first birth in an MRI machine. Christian Bamberg and a team from Charit? University Hospital in Berlin, Germany, announced the world first in December 2010, but the movie has only recently been released.

The video captures the active second stage of labour as the mother expels the fetus. The technique, called cinematic MRI, takes repeated images of the same slice of the body before joining them up to create an ultra-detailed video. It was recently turned on unborn twins for the first time to study a common complication where one fetus receives more of the blood supply and becomes much larger than the other.

By using MRI, the team was able to examine the relationship between the movement of the fetus and its position as it travels through the birth canal, which should help doctors better manage labour and delivery. In the future, the team also hopes to visualise the first stage of labour using the same technique, possibly using the videos to create virtual-reality computer training.

If you enjoyed this post, you might like to see a kung-fu fetus or watch a couple having sex in an MRI scanner.

OECD: High-income Americans should pay more taxes

(AP) ? An international group of economists is recommending that the United States adopt policies that would make higher-income Americans pay more in taxes to help boost the U.S. economy.

The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development favors eliminating some tax breaks for high-income individuals on mortgage interest and health insurance. It also proposes reducing tax breaks corporations receive when they borrow to make investments.

Some of the ideas the group advocated in its latest survey have been championed by the Obama administration. The Paris-based group also endorsed job training proposals in the administration's 2013 budget and praised its efforts to expand mortgage modification programs to combat foreclosures.

The OECD tends to advocate left-leaning economic policies. The endorsements are unlikely to sway Republicans in Congress who have opposed proposals the Obama administration has pushed.

The group is composed of 34 of the world's leading industrialized nations. It was begun in 1948 as a European organization created to help administer the Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Europe after World War II. In 1961, it expanded to include leading industrialized countries around the world. The organization's goal is to promote economic practices that promote growth.

Twice a year the group publishes global growth forecasts. The most recent of those forecasts in May warned that the euro zone region could contract by as much as 2 percent this year unless more forceful action was taken to deal with the European debt crisis.

The OECD predicts the U.S. economy will grow 2.4 percent this year and 2.6 percent in 2013. While that's only modest growth, it would represent improvement from last year's 1.7 percent growth rate for the U.S.

In Tuesday's report, the group's economists made a number of broad recommendations aimed at improving U.S. growth prospects and dealing with such issues as growing income inequality and long-term unemployment.

Among them:

? The Federal Reserve's interest rate policies should continue to support economic growth.

? Congress and the Obama administration should strike an agreement that would avoid a sharp jump in tax rates and across-the-board spending cuts. Those are scheduled to go into effect at the end of the year if a deal isn't reached.

? Various programs proposed by the administration's budget request in February for dealing with the unemployed "should be implemented without delay."

Procrastination!! | Dorene Meyer

I am generally a pretty self-motivated person with loads of initiative ? except for a few things ? like blogs and websites and such. I don?t know why ? I?m not really a technophobe. It?s just something I don?t go ?whoopee? about quite yet.

So, here I am a couple of days before leaving my desk top and Internet connection for the summer and?yeah? it?s time.

It?s been a great spring, starting with our Northern Writers book launch at McNally Robinson in Winnipeg on March 26th, which got a mention in the Winnipeg Free Press.

In March, May and June, we had 3?more local Northern Writers Reading Series events there in Norway House, featuring books by Brenda Fontaine and Dana Coates??and David Williamson and yours truly: M. D. Meyer. We also had readings by various authors from our newest anthology: Northern Writers volume 3. These include Benjamin Paul who will be releasing a book of poetry this summer.

Benjamin is planning to sell his book at York Boat Days, which is the first week of August here in Norway House.?We are hoping to do a launch of Benjamin?s book next fall ? possibly October.

On June 13th, I received two awards from the Canadian Christian Writing Awards for my contribution to the anthology: A Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider,??and on June 14-16, I was faculty at the national writers? conference: Write Canada. ?

In a couple of days, I will be participating in the much anticipated graduation ceremony for the Educational Assistant students that I have been teaching for the past two years. That will be a joyous celebration! There are many other graduates who will also be participating from Norway House receiving their?Bachelor of Education, Early Childhood Education, and other certicates, diplomas and degrees.

And then it?s off to visit family and friends. I?ll see two of my five grandkids on July 7th, which I am VERY much looking forward to. Around the middle of the summer, we?re going to head down to Wyoming again ? I love it there! So peaceful up in the mountains ? I hope to get a bunch of writing done ? and final edits on Rachel?s Children, which I hope to launch in October.

Even though I?m not the greatest at keeping up with blog posts, I do try to reply to all the emails at dorene@dorenemeyer.com?so please drop me a line sometime!?

Have a great summer!!

Key events in Egypt's uprising and transition

(AP) ? Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was declared the winner Sunday of the first free presidential elections in Egypt's history, making him the successor to ousted President Hosni Mubarak. Here are some key events from 16 months of turmoil and transition.

Jan. 25, 2011 ? Egyptians hold nationwide demonstrations against the authoritarian rule of Mubarak, who has led the country for three decades, in what would become known as the Arab Spring.

Jan. 26 ? A large security force moves into Cairo's Tahrir Square, beating and arresting protesters, using rubber bullets and tear gas. Three protesters are killed ? among the first of what will become about 900 dead in clashes in the uprising.

Jan. 28 ? Amid continuing unrest, protesters burn down the ruling party's headquarters and the military is deployed. Police virtually vanish from Egypt's streets, leading to a wave of looting, robbery and arson.

Jan. 29 ? Mubarak makes his first public appearance since the protests began, saying he asked his cabinet to resign. The move is met with scorn from protesters.

Feb. 1 ? Mubarak says he will not run again for president as tens of thousands converge in Cairo, responding to a call for 1 million Egyptians to unite against him.

Feb. 2 ? Mubarak supporters clash with anti-government protesters. Soldiers stand by without intervening, and more deaths and injuries result.

Feb. 10 ? Mubarak transfers power to his vice president while retaining his title and promises constitutional changes. The move falls short of protesters' demands.

Feb. 11 ? Mubarak steps down and turns power over to the military. Two days later, military leaders dissolve parliament and suspend the constitution, meeting two key demands of protesters.

April 13 ? The prosecutor general announces the detention of Mubarak pending inquiries into accusations of corruption, abuse of authority and the killings of protesters during the uprising. Mubarak's two sons, Gamal and Alaa, also are detained.

Aug. 3 ? Mubarak goes on trial, appearing in court in a hospital bed, with his two sons beside him.

Nov. 28 ?Voting begins in Egypt's first parliamentary elections since Mubarak's ouster. The election is staged over a period of several weeks and concludes in January with nearly half the seats won by the previously banned Muslim Brotherhood.

April 20, 2012 ? The presidential campaign officially begins, with the election commission announcing the candidates running for president. The commission had earlier disqualified 10 presidential hopefuls, including three considered to be potential front-runners.

May 23 ? The first round of voting for president begins with 13 candidates on the ballot, with Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister under Mubarak, emerging as the top two vote-getters.

June 2 ? Mubarak is convicted for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the uprising and is sentenced to life in prison, but cleared of corruption charges.

June 14 ? The Supreme Constitutional Court orders the Islamist-dominated parliament dissolved and rules that Shafiq can stay in the presidential race. The rulings by the Mubarak-era judges escalate the power struggle between the Muslim Brotherhood and the military.

June 16-17 ? Egyptians vote in a runoff election between Morsi and Shafiq. The military council that has ruled since the uprising issues an interim constitution, giving the generals sweeping authority to maintain their grip on power and limiting the powers of the president.

June 18 ? Morsi declares victory, but so does Shafiq.

June 19 ? Thousands of Morsi supporters gather in Tahrir Square to protest the interim charter issued by the military and the dissolution of parliament.

June 24 ? Election officials declare Morsi the winner of Egypt's first free election with 51.7 percent of the vote, as his supporters celebrate wildly in Tahrir Square.

Where the US and Pakistan are working together

The $75 million USAID Teacher Education Project alone won't patch the US and Pakistan governmental relationship. But education projects are one way to maintain people-to-people relations.?

The latest tumble happened this week when the United States announced it had called off negotiations with Pakistan to reopen NATO supply routes.?

But even as Washington and Islamabad figure out how to mend their struggling relationship, soft diplomacy efforts ? and billions of dollars ? are in place to keep US-Pakistan ties from fraying completely.?

In fact, a group of 22 high-ranking Pakistani education officials and policymakers are in the US meeting with education experts. It's part of a first-of-its-kind, USAID-funded project to professionalize Pakistan's teachers and upgrade the quality of education in the nation's elementary and secondary schools.

The USAID Teacher Education Project alone may not patch the relationship between the US and Pakistan, but funding education projects is one way the US is able to support the kinds of moderate values that both the Pakistani government and the US say they want to promote.

?We need a strong civil society here in Pakistan that is safe and secure. We cannot produce that without good education,? says Mahmood ul Hasan Butt, director of the USAID Teacher Education Project, which is being?implemented by?EDC,?a nonprofit based outside Boston.

Pakistan is having trouble attracting both teachers and students to classrooms. Dr. Butt attributes a large portion of these problems to the state of the teaching profession. Until now, there was no special training for teachers and few incentives to teach.

The USAID Teacher Education Project is a $75 million, five-year project under the Kerry-Lugar-Bergman Act. Since the project began in 2009, Pakistani teachers and policymakers have been meeting regularly in Pakistan, working on developing and implementing their own education policy changes, developing new syllabuses, and working with the higher education commission to implement new education degrees.

Pakistan is introducing both a two-year associate's degree and a four-year bachelor?s degree in education, with a plan to require a bachelor's degree in education by 2018. To encourage teachers to get the degree now, schools are offering higher pay to teachers with the new qualification.

Some in Pakistan criticize USAID?s approach to dispensing aid and Pakistan?s apparent dependence on it. The US has pumped $20.7 billion in aid into Pakistan since 2002 (some two-thirds military, the rest civilian). US lawmakers often complain that Pakistan does not cooperate as much as hoped, and have threatened to suspend aid. And in some cases have acted: After the doctor who helped the US track down Osama bin Laden was sentenced to 33 years in prison, the Senate voted to cut aid by $33 million. And more recently, the US cut?$20 million for the Pakistani version of Sesame Street after USAID made allegations of fraud against the show's producers.

Species-Specific Microbes May Be Key to a Healthy Immune System

News | Health

Mice raised with human microbiomes never develop mature immune systems, which may explain the rise in immunological illnesses

immune system microbiomeOf Mice's Microbes and Man's New research is showing how important the right mix of microbiota is for our health. Image: iStockphoto/Himerka

?

Mice have a jungle of bacteria, viruses and fungi in their stomachs?and so do we. These microorganisms help both mice and us break down dinner. As we are finding, these bugs also help to regulate the immune system. But we are just starting to learn how these tiny organisms influence us and how changing their composition changes us.

In an attempt to find out, postdoctoral researcher Hachung Chung and her colleagues at Dennis Kasper's Lab at Harvard Medical School tried raising mice with exclusively human gut microbiota.

The human microbes did pretty well in the mice guts (the researchers could tell by culturing fecal pellets from these mice). Interestingly, though, the mice with these microbes did not: their immune systems remained underdeveloped. Even when researchers gave rat microbiota to mice, the mice's immune systems failed to mature. The results were published in the June 22 issue of Science.

The findings are "perhaps the most definitive that I've seen," says Eugene Chang, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, who was not involved in the new study. They show "the critical and specific relationship between host and gut microbes, which is needed for proper development of the host immune response," he says.

The results support the thinking that we humans have coevolved with our microbes?and we're probably not the same without them. "The selection of partners is not by chance," Chang says. And that might explain why as we alter our microbiomes?with antibiotics and superclean upbringings?our immune systems have been changing as well, ushering in increasing rates of autoimmune conditions such as allergies and diabetes. "The consequence is that the balance between us and our microbes, determined through evolution, is upset in ways that impact our health and increase risk for many diseases that were previously uncommon," he notes.

Starting germ-free
For these experiments, starting germ-free is key. These extra-clean mouse colonies have been living for several years?and many generations?without contact even with the lab environment, so their stomachs remain in a prenatal state (as with humans): sans microbes.

The upside to a germ-free mouse facility is that because the animals' cages are sealed in airtight areas, it smells much better than rooms with standard caged lab mice. The downside is that they take a lot of care. Tools, food, bedding and water have to be sterilized via autoclave and introduced through a double-valve seal. Lab technicians and researchers reach into the cages with plastic gloves that are built into the sealed clear covers similar to the enclosure immunodeficient David Vetter, called the "bubble boy," lived in during his short life. A year after starting at the lab, Chung got married. And perhaps even more so than the food, flowers and guest list, she says, she planned the event largely around the mice.

Chung and her fellow researchers were interested in what happened if these mice got non-mousy microbiomes. To compare reactions with different microbiome compositions, Chung could then give these germ-free mice either human, mouse or rat microbiota (by feeding them microbiomes cultured from feces). One group was kept germ-free as a control.

(AP) ? About 30 members of an elite Bolivian police commando unit mutinied in La Paz on Thursday, expelling their commanders and seizing their barracks along with their wives to demand higher wages.

The barracks are just 100 meters from Bolivia's presidential palace.

The protesters were demanding salaries on par with soldiers and a pension equal to 100 percent of their salaries. Bolivian police earn about $144 a month and were not appeased by a 7 percent government-decreed wage increase this year.

The mutiny broke out after wives of the police participants were thrown out of the barracks by the men's superiors.

A tear-gas grenade exploded in the tumult, but La Paz was peaceful, with families strolling around downtown enjoying a national holiday.

A spokesman for the mutineers, patrolman Edgar Ramos, said an additional 500 police across the capital had joined the protest by similarly occupying other barracks.

That claim could not be independently verified and police headquarters did not address it, saying it would issue a statement later.

A February 2003 revolt over wages at the same barracks led to a gunfight with soldiers in which 19 people were killed, mostly police.

Bolivia has 33,000 police and their institution is considered be among the country's most corrupt. It has had seven commanders in the past six years.

President Evo Morales was out of the country Thursday in Brazil for the Rio+20 environmental summit.

Morales is closer to the military than to the police.

Portugal stands out as largest euro success story so far

Portugal stands out as the country making the biggest improvements, while neighboring Spain is seeing the smallest. Portugal's deficit in the first four months of 2012 is?far lower than it was in the same period of last year.

A Portugal fan celebrates during the public viewing of the Euro 2012 soccer championship quarterfinal between Portugal and the Czech Republic at the Fan Zone in Warsaw, Poland, Thursday, June 21, 2012. He has something else to celebrate. So far, Portugal has shown strong economic improvement, as compared to its fellow indebted eurozone countries.

The perhaps best indicator of whether the more indebted euro area countries are really making progress in reducing its reliance on foreign loans is the change in their current account balances. So far this year, Portugal stands out as the country making the biggest improvements, while neighboring Spain is seeing the smallest improvements.?Portugal?had during the first four months of 2012 a current account deficit of ?1.41 billion, compared to ?4.1 billion in the same period in 2011.

This means the deficit is down to roughly 2.5% of GDP, a sharp reduction from the more than 10% of GDP it had as late as 2010.?Italy, saw its deficit decline by 46%, from ?27.8 billion in January-April 2011 to ?15.1 billion in the same period 2012. The Italian deficit is equivalent to roughly 3% of GDP.?Greece?saw its deficit decline by 40%, from ?9.4 billion in January-April 2011 to ?5.6 billion in January-April 2012. Its deficit is however still equivalent to more than 8% of GDP, and even if you adjust for the fact that its deficit for seasonal reasons is traditionally bigger in the beginning of the year, we are still talking about a deficit of around 5% of GDP, which is of course far too high.

Spain hasn't released its April numbers yet, but?in the first quarter, its deficit fell by just 12%, from ?16.85 billion to ?14.85 billion. Adjusted for seasonal effects this is equivalent to a deficit of about 3% of GDP. So while we're seeing improvement in all countries, it is insufficient, especially in Greece and Spain, while Portugal has made the biggest progress. What about Ireland? Well, its statistics lag the most of all, as it won't release even first quarter numbers until Friday next week. But Ireland eliminated its deficit already last year.

MeFeedia Team Launches Beachfront Builder, A Platform For Building Apps On Every Device

HomePageDevices2Ok, so this isn't news, but -- video publishers want to get their content on as many devices as possible. That means iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets, Amazon's Kindle Fire, and that's not even counting a whole mess of different connected TVs. The problem is that the path to getting there is slow, laborious, and expensive. For content creators, "going mobile" frequently means hiring multiple developers to build and manage and update apps across multiple operating systems and device platforms. Or they can outsource the whole thing, which has a high upfront cost, and leaves them stuck doing the whole thing over again whenever they want to update their app or when a new device is launched.

(AP) ? Employers in April posted the fewest job openings in five months, suggesting hiring will remain sluggish in the months ahead.

The Labor Department said Tuesday that job openings fell to a seasonally adjusted 3.4 million in April, down from 3.7 million in March. The March figure was the highest in nearly four years.

The decline could mean employers are growing more cautious about adding workers in the face of financial turmoil in Europe and slower growth in the United States. Job openings can take one to three months to fill.

There were 12.5 million unemployed people in April. That means there was an average of 3.7 people competing for each open job. In a healthy job market, the ratio is usually around 2 to 1.

Openings have risen by almost a third since the recession ended in June 2009. But they are still below pre-recession levels of about 5 million per month.

April's decline in openings has coincided with a sharp slowdown in hiring. Employers added an average of only 73,000 jobs in April and May. That's down from an average of 226,000 in the first three months of this year.

The drop in openings was concentrated in the private sector, and was particularly steep in professional and business services. Available jobs fell 14 percent in that category, which includes high-paying jobs such as engineers, architects and accountants, as well as lower-paying temporary jobs.

Job openings also dropped in manufacturing, retail, and education and health services.

Fewer people quit their jobs last month. That's a pessimistic sign, since more quits are evidence that workers are confident that they can find new jobs elsewhere.

Employers hired 4.18 million people in April, 160,000 fewer than the previous month. The Labor Department's report measures gross job gains, while the monthly jobs reports are net figures that are calculated after subtracting layoffs and quits.

Nearly 4.1 million people were laid off, quit or retired in April. When that number is subtracted from the gross hiring figure, the total is close to the 77,000 net job gains in April reported earlier this month by the Labor Department.

Companies are posting more job openings but aren't necessarily filling them. Openings have increased by 13 percent in the past year, while gross hiring has increased only 4 percent.

Marco Rubio Not Vetted By Mitt Romney For V.P.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising Republican political star, is not being vetted by Mitt Romney for the Vice Presidential nomination, according to reports.

It was widely assumed that even if he didn't get the nod, Rubio, 41, would at least be on Romney's short list of possible V.P. picks for obvious reasons.

Young, charismatic and wildly popular with conservatives, he could also help Republicans win a key state (Florida) and make inroads with Hispanics.

Apparently Romney isn't looking at Rubio for the post, however.

Romney and Rubio

The first-term Senator has not been asked to complete any personal questionnaires or been asked to turn over any financial documents, insiders say.

It's been months since Romney named longtime aide Beth Myers to run his V.P. search, so it's unlikely she simply hasn't gotten to vetting Rubio yet.

Officially the Romney campaign has no comment, and Rubio has refused to make any sort of comment when it comes to vice presidential questions.

The news will be disappointing to some prominent conservatives who have been openly encouraging Romney not just consider, but pick Rubio.

Either way, Rubio has stumped for presumptive GOP nominee Romney, who frequently praises his younger counterpart on the campaign trail as well.

The 64-year-old Romney is polling about even with President Obama nationally and in key swing states such as Florida ahead of November's election.

Lil Wayne Speaks On Pulling Nicki Minaj From Hot 97 Summer Jam

'No person that works with me will be disrespected in my presence as long as I'm on this planet,' Weezy tells MTV News of his decision.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX

All Weezy wants is a little respect. After Nicki Minaj was insulted by a Hot 97 radio DJ, Lil Wayne made an executive decision and pulled his Young Money queen from the station's Summer Jam concert. When MTV News caught up with Tunechi to talk about the incident for the first time, he didn't throw stones or hurl insults at the New York City station, but simply stressed the importance of a certain seven-letter word.

"That's a female; first and foremost Nicki Minaj is a female. I don't know what anyone else believes, but I believe females deserve the ultimate respect at all times no matter, when or where or how," the multiplatinum rapper told MTV News on Saturday while backstage at Hot 107.9's Birthday Bash in Atlanta.

Minaj was slotted to close out the yearly rap extravaganza on June 3 and was planning to bring out Nas, Lauryn Hill, Foxy Brown, Cam'ron and Lil Wayne during her set. That plan went south after outspoken Hot 97 personality Peter Rosenberg downed Nicki's pop single "Starships" in front of concertgoers, prompting Wayne to pull the plug on all YMCMB Summer Jam performances, including Nicki's and DJ Khaled's.

"As soon as she called me and told me she felt disrespected, I just declined everything," Weezy told us. "I pulled her from the show because ... no person that works with me will be disrespected in my presence as long as I'm on this planet."

Wayne feels Nicki should have gotten the royal treatment from the radio station and its employees. "I expect the red carpet, in her manner; the pink carpet should be laid out for her," he said. "It's just an executive move, no salt, no bad feelings, no hard feelings."

Many, including Hot 97 veteran DJ Funkmaster Flex, criticized Minaj for not taking the stage, but Lauryn Hill issued a statement supporting Nicki's decision. "I don't have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs and walking with integrity,"

Weezy agrees. "I feel like a woman should be respected at all times, therefore I made the right decision," he said.

Did Lil Wayne make the right call pulling Nicki from Hot 97's Summer Jam concert? Tell us in the comments!

Report: Wildfire risks around the world likely to change dramatically

Previous studies produced projections of changing fire risks for individual regions. A new study attempts to gauge future changes to wildfire patterns globally as the climate warms.

Wildfire risks around the world are likely to change dramatically during the latter half of this century, with some types of terrain projected to see dramatic increases in likelihood and in the expanse of fire-prone areas during the next 30 years, according to a new study.

The areas at highest risk for increased fires in the short term include landscapes familiar to residents of the western US ? Mediterranean forests, woods, and scrub, such as those that blanket the coastal ranges of California, alpine grass and shrublands, desert shrublands, and forests dominated by conifers.

But over the longer term, significant increases in fire frequency are expected over a much wider range of ecosystems ? as are significant decreases. ?

IN PICTURES: Colorado wildfires??

Indeed, decreases in fire frequency often take a back seat to efforts to project places where fires are likely to increase. Yet the declines can be just as important, suggests Max Moritz, a fire ecologist at the University of California at Berkeley and the lead author of the study, which was published this month in the journal Ecosphere.

"You're worried about the right kind of fire being maintained or restored in these systems," he says. "Big decrease in fires ? could be just as disruptive ecologically as a big increase."

For instance, the decreases could allow vegetation types alien to the existing landscape to move in and alter the region's ecology in unpredictable ways. Or fewer fires would allow fuels to build up to levels that allow the fires that finally occur to reach catastrophic levels.

One type of ecosystem projected for significant decreases by century's end are subtropical savannas in Africa, Australia, and elsewhere. These are projected to see fewer fires than they currently experience, the research suggests. This would lead to major ecological changes there, since frequent fires keep savannas savanna-like.

Previous studies largely have produced projections of changing fire risks for individual regions of the globe, such as the western US. This new study is a rare attempt at trying to gauge future changes to wildfire patterns globally as the climate warms, the research team says. The warming has been triggered and sustained by rising carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere, increases researchers have traced to burning fossil fuels as well as by land-use changes.

The study applies to fires once the province of ecologists trying to gauge the effect of climate change on the future distribution of plants and animals, Dr. Moritz explains. It treats fire as an entity that has its own form of ecological requirements: fuel, fire-favorable climate patterns, and ready sources of ignition.

The researchers first gathered global wildfire data gathered by two satellites and spanning 11 years ? from 1997 to 2007. They used the information to estimate wildfire probabilities for each of 14 different broad vegetations types, or biomes, around the world under climate conditions that existed at the time.

They then turned to 16 climate models to develop projections of the climate's likely trajectory. They applied the results from each climate model to their fire model separately to see how much convergence they might or might not show in the final results.

They also used an existing model for plant production as a way to see how the abundance of fuel for these biomes could change in a warming climate.

As for ignition sources, the third piece of a fire's "ecosystem," humans supply the latter with enough regularity to suggest ignition sources won't be a limiting factor for fires.

From these steps they estimated changes to fire risks for each of the biomes for two periods: a 30-year span starting in 2010, and another starting in 2070. ?????

Pro-Biking Mayor Recovering after Bike Accident

Mayor Betsy Price leads a group of underprivileged children on a ride during the Annual Tree Lighting and Speedway Children's Charity Ceremony at Texas Motor Speedway on November 29, 2011 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price is an avid cyclist who regularly bikes up to 125 miles a week and?organizes rides in the city?like ?Tour de Fort Worth.? She holds weekly town hall meetings on wheels, which include a bike ride and discussion with fellow cycling members of the community.

Now, Price is recovering following a?nasty bike accident Saturday morning,?CBS Dallas Fort Worth reports, when she took a bad spill on a dangerous patch of gravel while out biking with her husband. The mayor, who was knocked unconscious, was taken to a hospital where she was treated for a concussion, broken collarbone, road rash, and bruising.

Price?s Chief of Staff, Jason Lamers, said the mayor was released from the hospital and has been resting at home.

Price, who has used the incident to highlight the importance of bike safety, says she?ll be back in the saddle as soon as she?s fully recovered, maybe even within the month.

?I took a spill on the bike this morning, but I?m okay aside from some scrapes, a concussion, and a broken collar bone. Ouch!? Price tweeted Saturday morning. ?Fortunately, my helmet stayed on. It could?ve been worse. Please be sure to strap on that helmet before you hop on your bike!?

With mayors across the country touting bicycling as a healthy, green alternative to commuting without appearing to do much biking themselves, it?s nice to see a city leader putting her money (or head) where her mouth is.? We have a feeling Price will be calling up her favorite citizens for a bike ride and brunch in no time.

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? What does a robot feel when it touches something? Little or nothing until now. But with the right sensors, actuators and software, robots can be given the sense of feel -- or at least the ability to identify different materials by touch.

Researchers at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering published a study June 18 in Frontiers in Neurorobotics showing that a specially designed robot can outperform humans in identifying a wide range of natural materials according to their textures, paving the way for advancements in prostheses, personal assistive robots and consumer product testing.

The robot was equipped with a new type of tactile sensor built to mimic the human fingertip. It also used a newly designed algorithm to make decisions about how to explore the outside world by imitating human strategies. Capable of other human sensations, the sensor can also tell where and in which direction forces are applied to the fingertip and even the thermal properties of an object being touched.

Like the human finger, the group's BioTac? sensor has a soft, flexible skin over a liquid filling. The skin even has fingerprints on its surface, greatly enhancing its sensitivity to vibration. As the finger slides over a textured surface, the skin vibrates in characteristic ways. These vibrations are detected by a hydrophone inside the bone-like core of the finger. The human finger uses similar vibrations to identify textures, but the robot finger is even more sensitive.

When humans try to identify an object by touch, they use a wide range of exploratory movements based on their prior experience with similar objects. A famous theorem by 18th century mathematician Thomas Bayes describes how decisions might be made from the information obtained during these movements. Until now, however, there was no way to decide which exploratory movement to make next. The article, authored by Professor of Biomedical Engineering Gerald Loeb and recently graduated doctoral student Jeremy Fishel, describes their new theorem for solving this general problem as "Bayesian Exploration."

Built by Fishel, the specialized robot was trained on 117 common materials gathered from fabric, stationery and hardware stores. When confronted with one material at random, the robot could correctly identify the material 95% of the time, after intelligently selecting and making an average of five exploratory movements. It was only rarely confused by pairs of similar textures that human subjects making their own exploratory movements could not distinguish at all.

So, is touch another task that humans will outsource to robots? Fishel and Loeb point out that while their robot is very good at identifying which textures are similar to each other, it has no way to tell what textures people will prefer. Instead, they say this robot touch technology could be used in human prostheses or to assist companies who employ experts to assess the feel of consumer products and even human skin.

Loeb and Fishel are partners in SynTouch LLC, which develops and manufactures tactile sensors for mechatronic systems that mimic the human hand. Founded in 2008 by researchers from USC's Medical Device Development Facility, the start-up is now selling their BioTac sensors to other researchers and manufacturers of industrial robots and prosthetic hands.
