Central Florida thinks it can compete with OSU

Heading into the 2012 season, Central Florida coach George O?Leary knew his team would already be playing with a deficit before it even stepped on the field.

NCAA sanctions for recruiting violations within both the football and basketball programs led to the announcement of one-year postseason bans for both just days before the Knights began fall practice.

They won?t find out the fate of an appeal of that ban until later this season. But bowl ban or not, O?Leary still sees an opportunity as the heavy underdog Knights prepare for Saturday?s matchup at No. 14 Ohio State.

A win would give the Knights their first ever victory as a Football Bowl Subdivision member over a ranked, nonconference opponent.

?I like playing nonconference games against tradition schools like Ohio State that have a great, long history of winning (and) a great tradition as far as the program?s concerned,? O?Leary said. ?But we go into every game with an opportunity to win it.

?That?s what I told our players at the beginning of the season, was that we expect to play 14 games this year. And you go into each game with an opportunity to win it. Now we have to perform to get that done.?

Before O?Leary?s arrival in 2004, the Knights? only victory over a team from a Bowl Championship Series automatic qualifying conference was against Alabama in 2000.

The program turned a big corner in 2007 when it earned its second against N.C. State en route to the Conference USA championship. They followed that up in 2010 with an 11-win season, another C-USA title and by capturing their first bowl victory, over Georgia.

Meyer has a new team this time around, but one that has been just as dominant against nonconference visitors.

In total, the Buckeyes have won 58 consecutive regular-season nonconference home games against teams not ranked in the Top 25. Coincidentally, the last loss was to a Florida school: a 34-17 defeat to a Bobby Bowden Florida State team in 1982.

But what will make it harder for the Knights to follow suit is O?Leary?s announcement Tuesday that starting running back Latavius Murray will likely be out Saturday after bruising a shoulder in the Knights? season-opening win at Akron.

Murray rushed 14 times for 109 yards and a touchdown before the injury. He was relieved by Miami transfer and redshirt sophomore Storm Johnson, who ran for just 36 yards, but had a pair of scores.

Murray didn?t practice at all Tuesday and O?Leary said that Johnson would likely start in Murray?s place against the Buckeyes with senior Brynn Harvey also getting action.

Whoever is in the backfield, if the Knights are going to have any success against a bigger and quick Buckeyes? defense, it will depend on how well sophomore quarterback Blake Bortles plays in his second career start. Bortles is coming off a three-touchdown performance against Akron.

It?s all adding up to an understated, but definite confidence among players in the Knights? locker room.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? A new model is allowing researchers at UNESCO-IHE, TU Delft and Deltares to predict coastline erosion due to rising sea levels much more accurately. It would appear that the effects of coastline erosion as a result of rising sea-level rise in the vicinity of inlets, such as river estuaries, have until now been dramatically underestimated.

The scientists have published their research in the Sept. 2 online edition of Nature Climate Change.

Coastline recession

The anticipated rise in sea levels due to climate change will result in coastlines receding worldwide through erosion. This is a known phenomenon that can in principle be calculated and predicted based on a given sea-level rise, by means of the so-called Bruun effect. However, things are a little more complicated when it comes to coastlines in the vicinity of inlets, such as river mouths, lagoons and estuaries. These places are affected by other factors, such as changes in rainfall due to climate change, and certain compensating effects (basin infilling).

Accurate model

Until now, science has lacked a model that takes all these effects into account in the calculations of a coastline's future development, even though a demand for this existed among engineers, coastal managers and planners. The majority of coastline prognoses only took the Bruun effect into consideration.

Scientist Rosh Ranasinghe, employed as associate professor at TU Delft and at UNESCO-IHE, has now succeeded in developing a new model that is able to produce much more accurate prognoses. He did so together with researchers of the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at TU Delft, UNESCO-IHE and knowledge institution Deltares. With the model, it is possible to make accurate predictions quickly -- within a few minutes -- of how the coastline will develop in the vicinity of inlets as a result of rising sea-levels.

Underestimated

The new model was in turn applied to four different and representative coastal areas (in Vietnam and Australia). The research showed that only 25 to 50 per cent of anticipated coastline change in these areas can be predicted using the Bruun effect. The other processes that occur in the vicinity of inlets are of at least equal importance and coastline change in these areas as a result of rising sea levels has until now been strongly underestimated.

This new model makes it possible to make significantly improved prognoses of coastline erosion due to a rise in sea-levels. Coastal management projects that are being launched shortly will be able to benefit from this model, which means it can make a valuable contribution to coastal management and planning in practice.

The research is being partly supported by the Deltares Coastal Maintenance Research Programme.

When I was recommended to him, he had nothing in place, and the exposure from a legal perspective was huge.? His W-4 forms weren?t completed properly or completely, and he didn?t have any I-9 forms, which document that employees can work in the United States legally.

A big no-no: Don?t lift someone else?s employee handbook. Your handbook needs to be customized based on the number of employees and the type of business.

Henry also warns business owners they categorize workers correctly. ?The laws are very specific on who?s an employee and who?s a contractor,? she says. ?The penalties are severe and the tax consequences are ugly.? She explains, ?If I only work for one place, that?s a red flag. If I work in your building on your computers, and if you supervise me, then I?m an employee, not a contractor.?

There are several different designations for trademarks and service marks, and they each mean something different. A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol and/or design that helps consumers identify the source of a product and distinguish it from products owned by others. A service mark identifies the source of a service instead of a product. People often use ?trademark? to mean both trademarks and service marks. Companies also sometimes try to protect sounds, smells, and even tastes as non-traditional trademarks, although registering source-identifying taste is nearly impossible.

A letter ?R? with a circle around it signifies that the name is a registered trademark, meaning that the mark is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, or another country?s trademark office. An owner of a mark can apply for federal registration, although it?s not required. Registration puts the public on what?s called ?constructive? or ?legal? notice that the owner claims an ownership interest in the mark. The ? symbol may be used only after an applicant receives approval for a registration, not while an application is pending.

The letters ?TM,? often in superscript, typically means that the owner does not have federal registration of the mark, but is claiming either common law rights or a state registration. Anyone can use this symbol if they wish to claim a mark as their own. No paperwork or permission is necessary to use the TM symbol.

The letters ?SM,? again often in superscript, are used just like the letters ?TM,? except they refer to an unregistered service mark identifying services instead of goods.

In your case, if you do not want to register your trademark, but you would like to protect your mark and claim it as your own, I recommend putting ?TM? next to it. Be sure that your mark truly is unique ? if someone else is using the same or similar name you might be infringing on their trademark.

Registering your mark provides many advantages, including putting the public on notice of your ownership of the mark. There is a legal presumption that if your mark is registered, you have the exclusive right to use the mark. For months, speculation was high among legal and financial analysts that Apple would include the Galaxy S III in its patent case. Currently, it is Samsung?s biggest-selling smartphone with shipments reaching over 10 million units into its first two months of release.

Reports say that Apple?s chief Tim Cook and Google?s CEO Larry Page have gotten into behind-the-scenes discussions since Apple?s court victory on August 24 that proved Apple smartphone technology was copied by Samsung. The ongoing legal tussle is seen by observers as an Apple-Google ?proxy war?.

Samsung uses Google?s Android operating system in all of its products currently disputed by Apple.

A few weeks ago I bought out the self-help section at Barnes and Noble. ?This week, we've moved onto management and leadership. ?At workshops this week, we had an amazing speaker come work with us on establishing a PLC (Professional Learning Community) at our building. ?He and I shared an energetic connection---lots of eye contact, he knew I was listening and fully engaged, and I was--I was hanging on his every word. ?I told a friend listening to him was like ice cream. ?

That, combined with a video another friend showed me from Simon Sinek (another brilliant motivational speaker type), has amped up my interest in management. Leadership. ?Sales. ?Bettering myself. ?Thinking, as Simon says, about the "why" more than the "how" or the "what." ?

I'm making a shift up in here, people. ?Focusing a little more on what the next 10 years are going to look like for me. ?I floated through my 20s (who doesn't, right?) and spent the first part of my 30s trying to figure out what the hell was going on in life. ?Now, though I still don't know what's going on, I've got myself a plan.?

US suspends Afghan police recruit training

US special forces in Afghanistan have suspended training for about 1,000 Afghan police recruits to vet existing members, the military said Sunday, after a surge in insider attacks on NATO.

There has been a sharp rise in so-called "green-on-blue" attacks in recent months, in which members of the Afghan security forces turn their weapons on their Western allies, sometimes their military trainers.

In more than 30 such incidents this year, 45 coalition troops have been killed -- about 14 percent of the overall death toll in the war for 2012. Most have been American, though the latest to die were three Australian troops.

"Current partnered operations have and will continue, even as we temporarily suspend training of about 1,000 new ALP (Afghan Local Police) recruits while re-vetting current members," a spokesman for the US forces in Afghanistan, Colonel Thomas Collins, said.

Taliban insurgents claim responsibility for many of the attacks, saying their fighters have infiltrated the Afghan army and police, but NATO says the majority of the incidents are due to cultural differences and personal animosities.

Last month was the worst for insider attacks in more than 10 years of war, with nearly one in three international coalition deaths caused by Afghan allies.

The ALP -- which has around 16,000 members -- is a US-sponsored police force recruited to fight Taliban insurgents in remote areas of the Afghan countryside, though it has been accused of corruption and violence towards civilians.

"While we have full trust and confidence in our Afghan partners, we believe this is a necessary step to validate our vetting process and ensure the quality indicative of Afghan Local Police," the US spokesman said.

The suspension was temporary, the colonel said but gave no timeframe. The serving ALP members will continue to carry out operations while the vetting goes on.

Training for the Afghan National Police and Afghan National Army -- carried out by NATO rather than the US -- will not be affected by the halt.

Afghan interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said: "We want all the training programmes for our police forces to continue and we are in discussion with our NATO partners about it."

There are about 130,000 US and NATO troops in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban insurgency and training the Afghan security forces since the Taliban were ousted from power in late 2001 in a US-led invasion.

The US-led NATO troops will withdraw at the end of 2014, giving all security responsibilities to the Afghan forces in a US-designed programme that began earlier this year.

The Taliban have stepped up their attacks in recent months as part of efforts by the insurgency to undermine the transition process.
